Discover the Tranquility of Paddling at Amiskowan Lake

If you’re looking for a couple hours of serene paddling adventure this early summer, we highly recommend exploring Amiskowan Lake, but more so the windy creek that takes you from Amiskowan Lake to Shady Lake. Here’s a little guide to help you make the most of your paddleboarding, canoeing, or kayaking experience.

The Journey to Shady Lake

Starting from Amiskowan Lake, paddling to Shady Lake is an enjoyable and relaxing journey. The creek at the northeast end of Amiskowan Lake is your gateway to Shady Lake. According to Google maps the bay where the creek starts is: 53°53’21.2″N 106°08’09.9″W. This picturesque paddle usually takes us about an hour each way on our stand-up paddleboards (SUPs). If you’re using a canoe or kayak, you might find the trip a bit quicker.

Scenic HighlightsSUP Waskesiu

As you paddle along the winding creek, you’ll be surrounded by nature’s beauty. Keep an eye out for various wildlife. On our recent trip, we spotted fish, frogs, a variety of birds, a few beavers, and even a family of otters. The creek is deep enough to avoid portaging, making it a smooth and pleasant journey. There’s also a quaint bridge you’ll navigate under, adding a touch of adventure to your paddle.

Exploring Further: Beartrap Lake

For those with extra time and a spirit of adventure, consider paddling upstream from Shady Lake to Beartrap Lake. This journey will require portaging over several beaver dams, so we recommend wearing water shoes and being prepared for an overnight camping trip. Beartrap Lake offers a campground where you can rest and soak in the tranquility of the wilderness.

Best Time to Paddle

We recommend paddling Amiskowan Lake from May to early July. During this time, the waters are clear and free from the thick weeds that can make paddling difficult later in the summer.

Getting to Amiskowan LakeWaskesiu

Most people haven’t heard of Amiskowan Lake, but it’s easy to find. On the road to the Narrows, just before the South Bay turnoff in Prince Albert National Park, you’ll notice the road widening on the left next to a small lake. That’s Amiskowan Lake. According to Google Maps, this is located at 53°53’45.6″N 106°09’20.7″W. Simply park where the road is wide, unpack your gear, and climb down a small embankment to begin your adventure.
